About Sir John Lavery

Sir John Lavery born in Belfast (20 March 1856 – 10 January 1941) was a painter best known for his portraits and wartime depictions. He was orphan at a young age and ran off to Scotland. He studied art and was later part of a group of painters known as "The Glasgow Boys". In 1888 he was commissioned to paint the state visit of Queen Victoria to the Glasgow International Exhibition. This launched his career as a society painter. He married an American beauty Hazel who he painted regularly. You can view his famous painting "The Madonna of the lakes" presented to St Patricks Church, Donegall Street. The painting was inspired by the statue of our lady with the lakes of Killarney in the background. In the portrait, Hazel posed as our lady and his daughter and step daughter were St Patrick and St Brigid.
