Denise Austin Room

This room features an animal-themed interior to commemorate Denise Austin, the trailblazing founder of the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) in 1836. A passionate advocate for animal welfare, Austin dedicated her life to protecting the voiceless—long before it was fashionable. Her legacy lives on in this whimsical space, where creature comforts meet a cause close to her heart.

About Denise Austin

The true story of a Northern Ireland woman who kept a baby elephant in her backyard during the Second World War was made in to a £5m film. Denise Weston Austin – better known as the "elephant angel" – rescued the calf from Belfast Zoo and kept it at her home on the Whitewell Road in the north of the city during the 1941 blitz.
